Despite inspiring Marvel storylines about Thor and Loki, the newest installment in the God of War game series, and a dazzling interpretation by Neil Gaiman, Norse mythology has a number of names that are just that–names, or a few brief mentions.
Beneath Yggdrasil’s Shadow seeks to bring some of these forgotten goddesses into the light, passing by venerated primary characters like Freyja and Hel and Frigg in favor of lesser-mentioned ásynjur such as Gná, a messenger for Frigg. Also in the anthology is a story about Eir, mentioned in the the Prose Edda as first a physician and then alternately as a valkyrie.
My story, “Oathbreaker”, tells the story of contract-binder Vár as Norse tradition starts to break down during the incursion of Christianity into the Nordic countries.
